Sad Little Tale

Children aren’t allowed

Even one step beyond the playground’s yellow borderline

But something smiled shyly

And I seized the moment

And I dashed to the forbidden frosty corner

And I couldn’t believe my luck

That everyone else had missed it

That I had it in my hand

That everything in my life had led me to this

And before anyone could take it

It was wrapped it in a tissue

And safe in my warm coat pocket

And after break-time we sat on the floor

And the teacher went on like every other day

And I was told off for no good reason

And I was punched in the arm by Corey Paisley

And I didn’t mind at all

Because of what I had waiting for me

I was looking at the coat rack

Where my cold diamond sparkled in safe darkness

And I imagined it

In my hand when I needed somewhere to hide

And at different times of day

It would shine green and gold

So nothing in this world could be so bad

And I would hold it

And share with it my secrets

And never get tired of it

And treasure it

As long as I lived
